This graph shows the changing risk of West Nile virus transmission each week based on the abundance of the mosquito that transmits the virus and the number of times the virus was detected in batches of mosquitoes.  Risk is higher than usual in Milwaukee for weeks mid-late August (weeks 33 and 34).

We found Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) in 2017 and 2018 at one location in Wisconsin.  The very cold 2018-2019 winter is likely to have killed any of these mosquitoes that were attempting to make it through the winter.

We’ll be continuing to monitor this species, a potential vector of Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya viruses, during 2019.
